Vimos en Desafinados esta entrada sobre los mejores solos de guitarra. Como siempre, sobran muchos y faltan muchos.

En mi opinión, esto sólo sirve para dedicar un ratillo a recorrer algunos de los temas que uno recuerda que escuchó o para descubrir algunos que no ha escuchado nunca. Probablemente para concluir que sigue faltando... y que sobra...

Pero por si a alguien le es útil para jugar un rato en Spotify... perfecto. Eso si, os recomiendo mirar "la radio del artista". Creo que encontraréis cosas bastante mejores. Es una opinión.

Highway Star

Aprovechando el cumpleaños de Ritchie Blackmore, vamos a repasar uno de los temas incluidos en la lista de mejores riffs. Highway Star, claro, como indica el título de la entrada.

La canción fué compuesta por Deep Purple (según cuenta la wiki) durante una gira en autobús, yendo hacia Portsmouth en 1971. Cuentan que un periodista preguntó cómo componían las canciones y Ritchie empezó tocando un riff basado sólo en un sol (G), Ian improvisó una letra y los demñas completaron el coro. La montaron sobre la marcha (nunca mejor dicho) y la tocaron esa misma noche. El tema apareció en marzo de 1972 en el LP Machine Head, colocado como uno de los 10 discos imprescindibles del hard rock por Stoneresk.

Desde entonces ha sido indiscutible en los conciertos de la banda. No sólo eso, la wiki nos habla de covers de Faith No More, Metal Church, Dream Theater, Type O Negative y otras bandas, especialmente de speed metal. Y las que no están ahí referenciadas, claro.

En el anecdotario del rock hay algunas historias sobre Ritchie y la banda que os recomiendo.

All right now

En el puesto 108 de la lista de mejores riffs tenemos "All right now", de Free. El guitarrista era Paul Kossoff y hoy se cumplen ya 33 años desde que muriera, allá por el lejano 1976, antes de cumplir los 26.

El tema fue compuesto por el bajista de la banda Andy Fraser y fue un rotundo éxito.

Vamos a repasar este temazo, en recuerdo de Paul, en varias versiones con algunos guitarristas que os sonaran, creo.

Orgasmatron

Iba yo el otro día escuchando mi mp3, cuando sonó Orgasmatron. Hacía mucho que no le tocaba (cosas de llevar muchos temas en aleatorio) y de nuevo me encantó. Ese riff pesado como una monstuosa maquinaria en marcha sin engrasar... simplemente perfecto. Hay algo en ese tema que me retrotrae a aquel Sister Ray del que algún día hablaremos aquí. ¿Que no? Cada uno tiene su historia! A la vuelta, se me ocurrió mirar los riffs de referencia que tenemos y no estaba. No diré yo nada de los que salen (por no señalar) pero este Orgasmatron se merece estar, en mi opinión, sin la menor duda. Así que lo añado como ya añadí aquel "I wanna be your dog". El orgasmatron le suena a la gente por el prefijo (lo de "orgasm.."). Era el nombre que le dieron a un aparato (una especie de coso) cuya función era provocar (o inducir) orgasmos. En estos tiempos en que no queremos saber de donde sale el bistec que comemos, quizás triunfara un sistema para no saber de dónde salen los orgasmos que tenemos. Jejejej. Originalmente, el tema lo grabó Motörhead en su album del mismo nombre (osea Orgasmatron, no Motörhead). Luego han habido versiones para parar un tren. Una de las primeras y, probablemente, la más famosa (quizás tanto que hay gente que no saben que el tema es de Motörhead) es la de Sepultura. Lo que no me esperaba yo era encontrar en el youtube semejante cantidad de versiones. Así que os traigo una pequeña selección para deleite de... ok,ok, ya me callo!

I was walking few days ago listening to the music in my mp3 player, when started Orgasmatron. There was a lot of time without hearing it (you know, this happens when you carry lots of song in random mode) and again I liked it as usual. That heavy riff as a screeching monster machine... just perfect. There's something in that song that brings me back to the Sister Ray, a song I hope we will bring here soon. ¿You don't agree? Nobody's perfect! Back home, I checked the 100 riffs list and it wasn't. OK, I will not talk against anyone but I think that Orgasmatron deserves a place on it. And.. I have added that song. Simple. As I did with "I wanna be your dog". Orgasmatron has a memory from, you know, orgasm. And, in fact, it was the name of a tool or technology able to cause or induct orgasms. The theme was originally recorded by Motörhead in the same name album (Orgasmatron, not Motörhead). Later, there have been lots of covers. One of the first covers and, probably, the most known (at the point there's people who doen't know the song is a Motörhead one) is the Sepultura one. But I really didn't expect to get at the youtube that amazing quantity of covers. You will find here a small selection of these covers... ok,ok, I stop!

Seguimos revisando la lista de los mejores riffs. Hoy saltamos al puesto 30 para traer Wild Thing, uno de los temas más versioneados e interpretados de la historia.

Following our series about the best riffs today we jumo to the 30th position to talk aboout Wild Thing, one of the most played and covered pieces.

La historia (A short history)

Wild Thing fue escrita por Chip Taylor y grabada originalmente por Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones; pero no sería hasta su grabación por The Troggs que se convertiría en un éxito que no ha dejado de rodar.

Wild Thing was written by the songwritter Chip Taylor and originally recorded by Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones; but was with the cover made by The Troggs it became a real success that has grown time by time.

When Chip Taylor originally demoed this basic three-chord song in 1965, he didn't take it too seriously. He later told Rolling Stone magazine: "I was on the floor laughing when I was through." Taylor added in Mojo magazine September 2008: "'Wild Thing' came out in a matter of minutes. The pauses and the hesitations are a result of not knowing what I was going to do next." Smoke on the water

Con Smoke on the water abrimos una serie que recorrerá la lista de mejores riffs de guitarra.

La historia

Smoke on the water cuenta una curiosa historia: El 4 de diciembre de 1971, Deep Purple estaba grabando Machine Head en Montreaux (Suiza) en un casino usando la unidad móvil de los Rolling Stones. Resulta que en ese casino hubo un un concierto de Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention y, en medio del solo de sintetizador de Don Preston en King Kong, alguien disparó una pistola de bengalas que incendió el local ("some stupid with a flare gun").

El título "smoke on the water" se dice que se le ocurrió al bajista del grupo (Deep Purple, claro) Roger Glover al despertar de repente recordando el humo y el fuego tal como lo vieron desde su hotel.

According to a posting on the DEEP PURPLE fan site The Highway Star, Guinness World Records has officially confirmed the new record for the "Largest Guitar Ensemble" with 1,802 players performing the PURPLE classic "Smoke on the Water". The record was set on June 23, 2007 in Leinfelden, Germany (near Stuttgart). That event was organized by Guitar World Record. The previous record of 1,721 players was rather short-lived as it was set just three weeks before on June 3, 2007 in Kansas City, Kansas, United States.
